Halloween Moose
I have lived in Anchorage for 8 years now, and over the years I’ve seen my fair share of moose. One time, my husband was trapped inside his car because there was a moose in the yard. A couple weeks ago, we had to keep the kids from going home at the end of the day because a mother moose and her two babies were wandering around school grounds.
This year, on Halloween, I saw more moose than I’ve ever seen in one day. The first two, a mother and baby, had just finished eating my friend’s pumpkins and were bedded down in her yard.

Later that night, right before the first trick-or-treaters came to call, two moose, another mama and baby, were spotted across the street from my house eating pumpkins off my neighbor’s porch. It was dusk, so the pictures didn’t come out very well, but you get the idea.

They are so big!! No wonder you prefer to be patient and wait for them to move on. On the other hand would they do something like attack? Maybe because they are accompanied by their young? They must be totally aware of you and decided that pumpkins were worth the encounter…

They are SO huge, it’s crazy. And yes, they have known to attack and kill, even. A man was killed on the University of Alaska, Anchorage campus in the ’90’s by a charging moose.
The moose on the lawn were definitely aware of us, but were too full and comfortable to worry about us.

Lovely pics, Erin. The moose seem so sedate - amazing to think how huge and powerful they really are!

Great pictures. The first time we ever saw moose up there, it was a mother and calf just walking through a neighborhood just like yours. Cool!

So they ate the pumpkins BEFORE Halloween? How rude! They could at least have waited till the next day!
