An Australian View

This koala bear was hanging out at Australia Zoo on a very hot and humid day during summer.

If you ask urban Australians about Koalas, they will rush to tell you “We don’t have koalas in our backyards like they say on teevee!”. The real truth is, the koala is *excellent* at camouflage and many people might have one in the backyard but not even notice.

They are so cute. But I didn’t know that they could be mean too. I guess the one I will really remember is the one during the fire and koala’s were drinking water from civilians out of their water containers.

Too cute for words, but yes, wild animals -even the cute one, can wack you one. Don’t think I’d want those claws in my face! Looks much better in the tree. Too cute!

That cutie has the right idea about what to do in hot and humid weather. Go hug a tree.

Hi there, I’m in Oz too. I found Mudflats last year, in September, when I was trying to find out information about Sarah Palin and have enjoyed being informed about Alaskan politics ever since.
I know we don’t have any koalas living in any of our trees . . . but I’d like to have them. We have lots of possums and beautiful bird life around here though. The closest thing to Brian and Brenda are dear – and there are heaps of them. They give you quite a fright at night time when you come face to face with one. It can give you quite a thrill taking out the garbage.

eep! Wonderful photos! Kudos! Now if we could just get the word ‘bear’ off the poor little guy’s head!
rofl – I called them koala bears my whole life and got blasted when I moved to Australia. Seems they aren’t bears at all but marsupials. And while that complaint, to me, seemed a tad finnicky (tomAto-tomAHto) there’s a stack of unbear-fans out there who take this way seriously…
It’s like when I called a bikkie a cookie…
